Biographical Abstracts

Edina Malkić has directed the International Association “Interactive open Schools” in Tuzla, Bosnia and Herzegovina, since 2008. Her focus is on introducing methods in schools to teach democracy, inclusiveness, social justice and the development of democratic and inclusive public schools primarily in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Balkan region.

From 2013-19, she led three large international projects focused on community schools development and dissemination in Central & Eastern Europe and Central Asia. More than 450 schools were transformed to community schools.

From 2009- present she has worked on the dissemination and scaling up the service-learning pedagogy in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, and Serbia (over 100 teachers delivered service-learning practices). She led 10 projects (national and international) to institutionalize service-learning pedagogy and develop resources for the education sector.

She co-founded and chaired the Central and Eastern Europe Service-Learning Network (2017 –22) under which a Service-Learning Week and Regional Service-Learning Award has been founded. She is co-founder of the Service-Learning in European schools and organizations Network (SLEsoN) together with the representatives from Latin America and Europe.

She initiated and co-founded with teachers from Bosnia and Herzegovina a Network of teachers and schools for Service-Learning of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

From 2020-present she led the initiation and establishment of six educational networks around six elementary schools with the focus on children’s educational needs, especially children coming from socially and economically deprived families. The networks currently include more than 50 stakeholders from public life.
