Biographical Abstracts
Jeffrey Sherman-Duncan joined Oregon State University Extension Service as the inaugural associate vice provost of partnerships. Initially hired to run the pilot program Open Campus, he developed the initiative in collaboration with community colleges, county commissioners, and community partners to enhance Cooperative Extension's responsiveness to community needs by integrating the larger university with local communities.
Sherman-Duncan was appointed as director of Open Campus in 2013, following the successful launch of three Open Campus sites. He was also tasked with leading new Extension innovations, including OSU Gateway, the OSU Engagement Academy, OSU Juntos, and leadership development.
In 2019, Sherman-Duncan became the principal investigator for a new project, partnering with Oregon Tribes, community partners, and community colleges to secure and implement the first New Beginnings for Tribal Students grant through USDA-National Institute of Food and Agriculture. The initial funding of $587,000 has since grown to a grant and funding portfolio exceeding $1 million, including state funding to support the hiring of a full-time director. This expansion mirrors the leadership model of the Open Campus and Juntos programs, solidifying Sherman-Duncan's role in advancing educational and community engagement initiatives across Oregon, particularly for marginalized communities.
