Biographical Abstracts

Norbert Steinhaus began his career at the Bonn Science Shop in 1988 and became a member of the Agricultural Transformation Research Network of Lower Saxony (trafo:agrar) at University of Vechta in 2023.

Since 2000 he has been involved in international projects on the topics of citizen participation in science and technology, science-society engagement, citizen science, and responsible research and innovation. He has participated in EU-funded projects as a coordinator or consortium partner. He coordinates the Living Knowledge Network, the formal international network of Science Shops.

Steinhaus has served as an expert reviewer for European proposals under H2020 and Horizon Europe and a member of the “Participation” working group convened by Germany’s Federal Ministry for Education and Research to advance science communication. In 2020 he served as a member of the Mission Assembly for Soil Health and Nutrition for the European Research Framework Programme of “Horizon Europe.” He assisted with a transfer audit for cooperation strategies of a German university, initiated by Stifterverband die Deutsche Wissenschaft and North Rhine-Westphalia’s Ministry of Culture and Science. In 2014, he served as a member of the steering committee for the SIS-RRI conference, organized by the Italian National Research Council and held in Rome under the framework of the Italian Presidency of the Council of the European Union. He presents lectures, presentations, and workshops on the national and international level on the topics of public engagement in research, science shops, responsible research and innovation, and methods of research engagement.
